It’s been almost a week since my last post, things have been a bit crazy! Yesterday I started a new job and on top of that I’ve moved to a new flat last weekend! I’m really excited about the flat, it’s super comfortable and cute. As you may understand, it has become my new favorite project and I can’t wait to show you some of it! Since the flat is super small, I really needed to think clearly before moving all my clutter to the next home. I think I’ve come up with some really handy solutions, and will try to show you later how it turned out! (still waiting for the sofa and some other things to arrive).
These events really inspired me to write this post about small spaces, and it might come in handy as some of you find themselves in a similar situation! Especially the living room is usually a challenge to design, it has to be multi-functional and cozy at the same time. The images I’m adding to this post might not all represent my kind of style, but I think they provide excellent inspiration!
Here are some of my tips:
Emphasize the height of the room by hanging on the wall paintings, curtains and/or frames reaching up to the ceiling, or by transforming your wall into one big bookshelf.
Try dividing your space through the use of furniture. For example, place a desk/table behind your sofa to create a eating/working corner and sofa area at the same time. Or, make your side table form the line between the seating area and the sleeping area (in case of a studio apartment)
One of the best tips I got some time ago was not to use the same shapes in your space. In a small living room, for example, a bulky sofa might look less bulky when accompanied by a small round sidetable instead of a rectangular one.
Don’t be afraid to use colour even if you’re space is small, it actually makes it look bigger by highlighting pieces individually
Also, don’t be afraid to choose one big piece of furniture, it will also make the room look more spacious (I just ordered a sofa that’s actually a bit big.. but I don’t like small sofa’s and I’m sure it will look good eventually ;) )
And finally, be smart and try to find furniture with storage space. I got lucky with my bed for example, which has a huge space under the mattress. I can literally just push up the mattress et voila: a big container full of stuff.
What are your smart storage solutions? I’m sure I haven’t covered them all! Hope to be able to write soon again.
Have a great day and thanks for reading!
